In the description we must add that this rose is very sensible to mildew. Musk with lemon flavor.

A rose named Belle Davoust, listed separately from the multiflora Davoust, existed at least since 1838. Might it be Marechal Davoust, that appears to have a rather misterious origin? A 1858 reference report it among a list af new (truly new or new in England?) moss roses. A 1880 reference does not report the breeder (Robert?) although this breeder is reported for at least another moss rose (Bayard) listed in the 1858 reference.

The moss roses reported by Rivers are all by Robert and from early 1850s. While Robert might have commercialized an earlier rose, 'Belle Davoust' might be distinct, too.

The fact that in 1858, in a note and generically, Rivers lists together some moss roses (some of which bred by Robert) does not mean that all of them were bred by him. By contrast Die Rose .. in 1880 is much more analytical and precise. All “Rivers roses” are reported (but Ferdoucy) and a short description is added. Robert is reported as the breeder only of some of them and this information is completed by the year of introduction. Die Rose ... lists, besides the moss roses reported by Rivers, other moss roses by Robert (Arethuse and Nerestan, the latter unknown to HMF, ...). As you can see Marechal Davoust in not among them! Up to now these are the references. Apparently the only reference that links (in black on white) Marechal Davoust to Robert is in Roselexikon 1936. .. up to now, of course! Not much in my opinion! Arethuse Robert 1852 Bayard Robert 1856 Bramante Ferdoucy Kosciusko Robert 1853 Marechal Davoust Nerestan Robert 1854
