Origin:
Bred by Reimer Kordes (1922-1997) (Germany, 1977).
Introduced in Germany by W. Kordes' Söhne (Retail) in 1983 as 'Konrad Henkel'.
Class:
Hybrid Tea.  
Bloom:
Red.  Flowers velvety red.  None / no, strong fragrance.  35 petals.  Average diameter 3".  Medium, large, double (17-25 petals), full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary, cluster-flowered, in small clusters, high-centered bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Bushy, upright, well-branched.  Large, glossy, semi-glossy, medium green, dark green foliage.  

Height: 3' to 28" (90 to 70cm).  Width: up to 16" (up to 40cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 7b and warmer.  Can be used for beds and borders, container rose, cut flower or garden.  Disease susceptibility: susceptible to Mildew.  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.  Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .

Nigel Pratt at Tasman Bay Roses says this rose has plentiful dark red flowers on a strong upright plant... good for picking...


Avenue Red was removed from the Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens (ARBG) Display Trial because its trial period expired.


This rose was named to mark the 75th birthday of one of the main architects of the post-war German economic revival. Konrad Henkel was born 25 October 1915 and passed away 24 April 1999.
