'Général Cavaignac' was only the hybrid perpetual presented in 1847 by Jacques Foulard. M. Margottin paid for the exclusivity of this rose and put it in commerce with M. Cochet in 1849.

We have separate listings, as the early descriptions do not seem to be of the same rose: - Foulard's: violet-red, reverse whitish red, diameter 9-10 cm - Margottin's: pink to deep pink, 7-9 cm

I explained everything on this topic with much details and historical references in the book. It only existed one H.P. 'Général Cavaignac'. Margottin himself never told/write he was the breeder! The main problem with doublons in our archives is mostly due to imprecise descriptions therefore confusing us or mixing with another rose variety. Not to mention blooming variations who may occur depending on soil/climate/exposure of the rose and even the perception of colours according ones eyes...

Given adequate water, this small shrub will happily bloom through the hottest months. It's fragrant, healthy, and a bright but not jarring pink. I consider it one of the best roses that, strangely, not too many folks seem to be growing.

I started this rose from a band 2 years ago. It has grown into a 3ft tall upright multi caned bush. Minimal blackspot...no spray. No mildew or rust noted. Not a fussy rose. Blooms do not ball. Almost continuous bloom/proflic. Beautiful very deep pink. 3-4 inch blooms. Some nod. 3 day vase life. Very strong old rose fragrance to me. Didn't like dappled shade....loves full sun. Heavy feeder....did noticably better with manure and fish emulsion than with granular fert for me. Becoming one of my favorite roses.
