p87 Mr. Richard Walsh. I was fascinated by Sam McGredy’s hand-painted roses and used ….. The most successful of these parents for me was undoubtedly ‘Old Master’’, which, when crossed with ‘Samourai’, gave me my award winning ‘Lifeline Rose’. It is similar in colour to ‘Old Master’, but has more of the form of ‘Samourai’. Unfortunately it inherited the numerous long prickles characteristic of these roses, but perhaps that contributes to its usefulness as a hedging rose.

p145 Photo. ‘The Lifeline Rose’. I began breeding roses for fun in 1980. I had no thought at the time about marketing. It was only for fun. My goals were (in order) :
*To grow a rose from seed - done
*To grow a rose from seed I had pollinated - done
*To grow a rose from seed with one of my seedlings as a parent - done
*To grow a commercially viable rose – ‘Lifeline’ was probably the first
*To grow a seedling using a species rose not already in modern roses- still working on it!
In 1983 I had grown a number of seedlings from ‘Samourai’ x ‘Old Master’. I liked the flower on one, a cerise and silver bicolour, but it was fairly puny. When I budded it, however, it developed into a vigorous plant, producing flowers continuously, so I propagated 5 more plants for trial (in the early 90's) with the other more promising ones. I called it The Painter because of its "hand painted" qualities, but Sam McGredy has since registered a rose by that name. I had come to know Margaret Appleby (editor of the NSW Rose) when she joined the Rose Society of NSW Inc and we became friends. Margaret is Director of Lifeline Macarthur and in discussing her role which includes fundraising for the organization, I offered her a rose of her choice. This was her choice. With her permission, it was submitted to the NRTGA in July 1997 for a 2-year trial and I was excited at winning a Certificate of Merit and Best Australian Raised Rose. This rose is available from Lifeline Macarthur and may be ordered by phoning them on (02) 4648-2224. Richard Walsh.
