Origin:

Bred by James Lee (United Kingdom, before 1828).
Introduced in France by Julien-Alexandre Hardy / Roseraie du Luxembourg in 1828 as 'Emmeline'.
Introduced in United Kingdom by William Paul & Son in 1912 as 'Hebe's Lip'.

Class:

Damask, Gallica / Provins, Hybrid China, Hybrid Noisette, Hybrid Rubiginosa.

Bloom:

White or white blend, cherry-red edges, pink undertones. Strong fragrance. 10 petals. Medium to large, single to semi-double, in small clusters, cupped-to-flat bloom form. Once-blooming spring or summer.

Habit:

Armed with thorns / prickles. Dark green foliage.

Height: up to 4' (up to 120cm). Width: up to 4' (up to 120cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default). Can be used for beds and borders, container rose or garden. Vigorous. produces decorative hips. Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood.. Prune after flowering is finished.

The synonmy 'Emmeline' = 'Madeline' is incorrect, according to the "Annales de flore et pomone", 'Madeline' is 'Emmeline à fleurs pleine', i.e. Emmeline with full blooms, contrary to the original 'Emmeline', which had semi-double blooms. 'Margin Hip' vs. 'Double Margined Hip' suggests the same.
