'Rugspin' rose References
Book (2007) Page(s) 128. Ian Spriggs. Narre Warren, Vic. ....There are wonderful hybrids amongst my personal collection including 'Rugspin', 'Scabrosa', 'Alba', 'Frau Dagmar Hartopp and the Canadian hybrid 'Jens Monk'. Large hips follow most and, of course, the birds have a field day. The seed are very fertile and I have between thirty and forty self-sown seedlings (or should I say bird sown) growing around the garden. Most have flowered, but all are similar to 'Rugspin' or 'Scabrosa'.

p47 Mrs. Diana Fickling, Mount Waverley, Victoria. 'Rugspin' (Petersen, Denmark, circa 1960) - a bright cerise pink single Rugosa rose with leathery foliage which is very disease resistant. I have this rose growing as a group of 4 standards and it causes much comment. If not dead-headed regularly, produces large fat hips. Would make a wonderful large hedge and I wish I had the room to plant one.

For many years I was able to import beautiful old roses from my old friend Valdemar Petersen of Love in Denmark. His roses were always accurately named and always arrived in excellent condition. He sometimes slipped one of his own creations into the parcel and this was how 'Rugspin' arrived in New Zealand. It is truly a beautiful rose. the blooms are 13-14cm wide and the five single petals are royal purple in colour followed by large, fat, orange fruit. It is a very fragrant rose that will remain a lasting memory to a fine, dedicated rosarian.

The scarlet-crimson, single flowers of this shrub rose have a bold central boss of golden yellow stamens. This gives an attractive display when it is in bloom, ideal for mixed borders or bedding schemes. The bushy growth is made up of prickly stems and glossy green, typically rugose foliage. Zones 5-10. Petersen, Denmark, circa 1960. Parentage unknown.

Magazine (1998) Page(s) 109. Vol 92, Part 4. Dr. Alan S. Harris. Northern Lights and Nordic Roses. 'Rugspin' was introduced by the Danish hybridist Valdemar Petersen in the 1960s. 'Rugspin' is 'Roseraie de L'Hay' x Rosa pimpinellifolia var. altaica and receives its name from rugosa + spinosissima. It belongs among the Rugosas and it has the group's typical style of growth (1.5 x 1.2m), appearance and hardiness. It is a favourite in parks and public gardens because it repeat-flowers and has a wonderful show of hips in the autumn. It is surprisingly fragrant for a Rugosa-like rose.
Book (1997) Page(s) 187. ....I added two of 'Typica' which I had not grown before. The flowers are very like those of 'Scabrosa', but deeper in colour. And deeper still is 'Rugspin', the cream stamens startling against the colour of the petals.
