[From Modern Roses 10, p. 734: Stern's Nursery, Geneva, New York. Stern's Nursery introduced 'Maria Stern'. Otto Stern and Horace Hagedorn were co-founders of the Miracle-Gro Company. They hired Rutgers University professor O. Wesley Davidson to develop a water-soluble fertilizer which became known as Stern's Miracle-Gro. They began marketing this in 1951. It was remarkably successful, and made both wealthy. The Miracle-Gro Company merged with Scott's in 1995, forming Scotts Miracle-Gro, with Hagedorn as the head. He retired in 1997.Hagedorn and his wife Amy later became famous for philanthropy, and various foundations continue to distribute the remainder of the wealth generated by the success of Stern's Miracle-Gro.
