My first experience was decent. That was 6 years ago. They were cordial, and it was simple, but the shipping definitely felt predatory.

My second experience, which was this year, was fairly nasty. I felt like a major inconvenience to them. Shipping felt similarly predatory. Luckily, that is the last experience I need with them, since I was only using it for rare roses only they had.

Michael - what do you mean by "predatory" ?

My experience with Roses Unlimited over the past two years has been nothing short of AWESOME! I love speaking with Pat and Stephanie. Their plants always have a very well developed root system filling the one gallon pots they use. I wish their shipping boxes were sturdier but the root system is always good. I have ordered and received about 30 roses from them over 2021 and 2022.

I didn't want your experience to be the only or last word on Roses Unlimited because I don't think your comments/experience are representative of the larger rose growing community or of the quality of the vendor Roses Unlimited.

Their shipping costs are unecessarily high. Higher than charged by the carriers, I believe.

Agreed. But they also use UPS second day I believe whereas with many others it's UPS or FEDX or USPS ground. I for one am willing to pay more for timely delivery. Compare RU prices for roses to the prices at Heirloom - they are half as much in some cases. The higher shipping will eat into that savings granted. West coasters may be used to Heirloom or Rogue Valley or Northland Rosarium or Regan which are all on the west coast. Roses Unlimited is in South Carolina, over 2,500 miles away. I know I wait much longer for my order from Heirloom or Regan to arrive (from west coast) than I wait for orders from Roses Unlimited or Jackson & Perkins (in South Carolina).

I don't like using the word predatory. One could use the same word about the prices at Heirloom. Nothing wrong with saying that shipping costs are high - that would be factual without any negative connotations.

By predatory, I mean that 2 states over should not cost $35 more than a competitor. I looked at it many ways and concluded they add costs to it. Without an explanation (or a decent site that explains ANYTHING), I can only conclude it is predatory.

Michael, how do you figure two states over? Aren't you in Oregon? Roses Unlimited is in South Carolina.

Interesting subject (at least for those of us in the US). I bought multiple roses from multiple vendors in 2021-22, and I thought it might be might be instructive to compare prices. Note that each of these purchases was at least 2 roses delivered per order, and was whatever the vendor chose as their “standard” shipping (not a “premium” shipment option). Do keep in mind there is also the variable of container size, I received 1 gallon, 2 gallon, dormant bare roots, and band containers but I didn’t try to weight for that. This is simply the bottom line cost per delivered rose:

Burlington: $3.02/ea.
Roses Unlimited: $6.00/ea
High Country: $6.32/ea
David Austin: $6.65/ea.
Northland Rosarium: $7.31/ea.
Palatine: $9.74/ea (across border shipment)
Antique Rose Emporium: $10.03/ea
Rose Petals Nursery: $10.69/ea.
Rogue Valley (2021): $10.57/ea
Rogue Valley (2022) $29.19/ea. (not a misprint)

Lee - your numbers represent only shipping costs, right?

It is worth noting that Kimberly - the Rose Geek - has several videos out on YouTube showing the unboxing of like 20+ orders from various vendors (in 2021 and in 2022). She has ordered roses from places I did not know even existed and films the unboxing and puts the video out on YouTube. She does a "rack and stack" where she assumes 5 roses are purchased from each vendor and she lists the total cost for 5 roses in increasing order - essentially it's a ranked low-to-high cost listing of all the rose vendors. It's definitely worth checking out. On YouTube simply search for "Rose Geek"

Kimberly is registered here on HMF as RoseGeek I believe. She occasionally makes comments and posts pictures. She is a big fan of David Austin roses and has 600+ roses on her riverfront property in Maryland.

Correct. Just the billed shipping cost/number of roses. As you probably know, a few vendors also charge a nominal handling fee, and some run specials offering free shipping if you buy a certain quantity, or order at slow times of the year (e.g. Heirloom). Of course, “free shipping” is like “free lunch”, and it really isn’t free, it just gets rolled up in the price of the rose. So in one sense, it really boils down to the way Kimberley factored it…total combined price. Thanks for the tip on the video.

I wish the nursery rating system was more usable on HMF. Unfortunately, nearly all N. America nurseries are rated excellent overall with the exception of Edmunds. And there is no individual rating category for rose price, or shipping costs.

Some of the healthiest roses I've ever received in the mail, and these traveled from one coast to the other. Very very well packed, and large own root plants. Thank you Roses Unlimited!

Did anyone actually get any roses from RU this year?
I attempted to order, and I did so over the phone, but then I've never been charged on my card, no confirmation of order, no invoice sent, no receipt, no reply to my email.
I've placed orders elsewhere, since after waiting 9 weeks for a response, though I've ordered a smaller order from another nursery 4 weeks ago, and received them Saturday morning.

I'm curious if they have decided to only sell locally now. It would have been nice if they could have updated their website to inform of their actions (or inactions).

RU does not ship to the State of Hawaii. I live in Honolulu (Kapahulu), and I have my RU roses sent to my second home in Florida (Jupiter); furthermore, I have 15 roses on order from RU, and they will be shipped in 04/2022. You might want to order roses from K&M, but I got a hunch that they only take profitable orders, and it took a while for K&M to respond to my emails...they were short of employees around 09/2021, and I received my order in Florida around 10/2021. The following is a list or rose nurseries that I have ordered from, and they ship to Hawaii: A Reverance for Roses, Rogue Valley Roses, Heirloom Roses, High Country Roses, Burlington Rose Nursery
