He says it has been a 25-year project, beginning accidentally when he crossed ‘Strawberry Ice’ with ‘Class Act’ and found that green tinge in a seedling. Those first seedlings were quick to lose their leaves but after years of crossing with other roses it now has the vigour and colour he sought. Around the nursery, Rob refers to this new green rose as Pounamu after the New Zealand jade or greenstone so prized by Maori, but he is searching for a name that everyone will be able to pronounce, so look out for it under a different name when it is released in 2020. That this is a special rose was reinforced when it won the People’s Choice Award at the Regional Conference of the World Federation of Rose Societies in Palmerston North in 2013.
