Introduced in United Kingdom by Pennell & Sons Nursery in 1959 as 'C. 'Vyvyan Pennell''.
Class:
Early Large Flowered, Group 2.  
Bloom:
Mauve.  Average diameter 7".  Single, double bloom form.  Late spring to early summer, early autumn.  
Habit:

Height: 6' to 10' (185 to 305cm).  
Growing:
USDA zone 4b through 9b.  Plant in sun or partial shade.  Disease susceptibility: clematis wilt.  This plant blooms twice.  It blooms on the previous year's growth, so resist the urge to prune it in early spring.  It will bloom a second time on new growth.
