Book (2012) Page(s) 110. Christine Mackenzie. Where Do Our Trophies Come From? Iris Gee Challenge Trophy. 1 large stem. Roger Gee was responsible for the rose 'Iris Gee' which he found on his bush of 'Liverpool Echo'. He budded and grew this sport rose and named it after his wife, Iris. Roger and Iris both enjoyed their roses. They worked well together and looked lovely staging roses. Roger was a good demonstrator at pruning demonstrations, those days at Pollard Park. He had a favourite fine saw which he treasured.

In the Floribundas there has been more shuffling with again two roses not making the list.... and consequently only two new roses on the list, those of .... and 'Iris Gee'. I have a feeling in the back of my mind that 'Iris Gee' had been on the list in some years past.

Book (1994) Page(s) 114. Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1993-94 Season. 'Iris Gee' Gee NZ 1987; Sport of 'Liverpool Echo'; soft apricot pink; 42 reports on 65 bushes; 1.7 metres; 7.8 rating. This is a lovely sport of'Liverpool Echo' discovered by Roger Gee from Blenheim, and has received good ratings from most reporters over five years. It grows tall and healthy with light green foliage whicb acts as a perfect foil for the attractive soft apricot pink HT-type flowers. It cuts well and lasts extremely well in a vase. It is best picked at the bud to half-open stage to retain the HT form. I agree with a grower from Marlborough who thinks it is the best vase rose he knows - lovely for bridal work. A decided acquisition and well worth growing.
Book (1993) p17. Judith Hodgins. Masterton. Lovely 'Liverpool Echo' in her second season growing against a shed wall, and already halfway up it. She will be joined in a few months by her sport 'Iris Gee'. Saw it a year or two back, but couldn't find the supplier. It has the same dainty shape and that translucent sheen, but in paler and softer shades.
p102 Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1992-93 Season. Floribundas. 'Iris Gee'. Gee, NZ 1987. Sport of 'Liverpool Echo'; apricot pink; 11 reports on 16 bushes; 1-4 years; 1.7 metres; 7.7 rating. All reports rate this at 7 or higher so that is good news for this sport. Lovely soft apricot in colour otherwise very similar to 'Liverpool Echo'. Grows tall, healthy with light green foliage that sets off the flowers. Cuts well and lasts in vase, best picked at bud to half open to retain HT form. Southland reports that it can damage in the rain and heads flop over a bit. Marlborough reports that it is the most popular floribunda in the district where it hails from. Well worth growing and an easy rose to handle.
Book (1992) Page(s) 103. Nola Simpson. Review of Newer Roses for 1991-92 Season. Floribundas / Shrubs. 'Iris Gee'. Gee NZ 1987; Sport of 'Liverpool Echo'; apricot pink; 9 reports on 11 bushes; 1-6 years; 1.4 metres; 7.7 rating. Reports very good on this sport except from the West Coast where it has not impressed due to fading, slow growth and repeat, although healthy. Elsewhere the comments all mention the beautiful apricot pink colouring, freedom of flower, lovely heads both large and small, best from bud to half open then inclined to fade out, beautiful vase rose. Very healthy rose.
Book (1991) p81. Peter Elliott. Are You Getting the Most From Your 'Liverpool Echo'? - has a sport called 'Iris Gee' - also a lovely rose with a soft creamy-apricot flower. At this stage, 'Iris Gee' does not seem to be as rampant, but it is a younger bush.
p105 Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1990-91 Season. Floribundas. 'Iris Gee'. Gee 1987; Sport of 'Liverpool Echo'; apricot pink; 5 reports on 8 bushes; 1-3 years; 1.7 metres; 7.8 rating. This Blenheim-raised sport grows and generally behaves just like its parent, 'Liverpool Echo', so plant at the back of the bed or against a fence.
Book (1989) Page(s) 77. Nola Simpson. Manawatu. Favourite Roses. 'Iris Gee' HT./FI: Although this rose is new to most, I have grown it for a number of years now and I am really taken with it. Lovely soft apricot, HT. type blooms, borne in both small and large trusses on a vigorous bush that is well clothed with medium green, healthy foliage. It makes an outstanding exhibiting and vase rose and lasts exceptionally well. I predict a very good future for this rose.
Book (1988) p10 Nola Simpson. In the Trial Ground 1987-88. The Silver Star of the City of Palmerston North and Certificate of Merit for the best New Zealand amateur rose on trial went to 'Iris Gee' from Roger Gee, Blenheim. This is a most attractive HT-type Floribunda, the flowers being a beautiful soft apricot pink colour, and they are borne in both small and large trusses on strong, healthy bushes with medium green foliage to ground level. This rose is actually a sport of 'Liverpool Echo' and will be sought after for floral work, vases and exhibiting.
