Introduced in Australia by H. Kemp in 1909 as 'W. R. Smith'.

Bloom:

Cream, blush shading, darker outer petals, yellow undertones. Strong fragrance. Large, double (17-25 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Height: 5' to 12' (150 to 365cm). Width: 5' (150cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).

Patents:

Patent status unknown (to HelpMeFind).

Parentage:

Maman Cochet (Tea, Cochet, 1890) × Madame Hoste (tea, Guillot, 1887)

Notes:

William R. Smith was the first superintendent of the Botanic Gardens in Washington, D.C. who died in 1912. Different opinions on parentage - see References.
'William R. Smith' in commerce in Europe is often 'Marie van Houtte'. WRS is creamy white and shaded shell-pink at the centre (blanc crème, centre teinté rosé). MVH is yellowish white, edged pink (blanc jaunâtre liseré rose vif).
