Discovered by Vita Sackville-West (United Kingdom, before 1947).

Found Rose, Gallica / Provins.  

Purple - crimson, dark purple shading.  None to mild fragrance.  Average diameter 3".  Medium, double (17-25 petals), borne mostly solitary, in small clusters, button-eye bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  

Armed with thorns / prickles, upright.  3 to 5 leaflets.  

Height: 3' to 4'7" (90 to 140cm).  Width: up to 3' (up to 90cm).

USDA zone 4b through 8b.  Shade tolerant.  

On March 9, 1947, Vita Sackville-West found the rose that came to be known as 'Sissinghurst Castle' when she started to clear the garden at Sissinghurst Castle.

Lloyd Brace of The Roseraie at Bayfields says this rose has semi-double, rich crimson-purple petals, paler at the edges and lighter on the reverse, and measure about 3 inches across. It will tolerate some shade and poor soil and has a tendency to sucker...
