[From Roses of America, by Stephen Scanniello and Tania Bayard, p. 17:] In 1882, H.B. Ellwanger published The Rose, a book that soon set the standard for rose classification. Ellwanger, proprietor of the Mount Hope Nursery in Rochester, New York, described and evaluated nearly a thousand varieties of roses in his book, but he complained that many of them were European imports unsuitable for cultivation in America.
