[From The Book on Roses, 1931, by Dr. G. Griffin Lewis, p. 139:] M. Leenders of Steyl-Tegelen, Holland, ...was born on May 31, 1883...specializing in Hybrid Teas.

[From A Rose Odyssey, by Jean Nicolas, 1937, p. 143:] Toward the German border, at Teyl ...is the house of M. Leenders and Company, who came to the front in 1908 with the famous pink rose Jonkheer J. L. Mock.

[From Botanica's Roses, 1988, p. 678:] From the 1900s to the 1970s in Tegelen, Leenders produced a large output. His enduring successes include the Large-flowered/Hybrid Tea 'Comtesse Vandal' (1932) and the Cluster-flowered/Floribunda 'Nathalie Nypels' (1919).

Around the year 1900 he did an internship with...Peter Lambert in Trier. This nurseryman introduced Mathieu Leenders to breeding new roses by crossing. He started his own company in 1908, with his father as a silent partner, under the name M. Leenders & Co.
