During 1912 Ninian Bow MacKay started developing a nursery at 9 and 11 MacDonnell Ave., West Hindmarsh (inner-city suburb of Adelaide) He concentrated on the production of roses with particular emphasis on standard roses. The nursery became known at MacKay Nursery, and N B MacKay developed various methods of propagation and budding to produce healthy strong plants, and in fairly quick time. The nursery continued developing, and during the depression time, Walter Fails, son of Mrs MacKay, joined the business and commenced expanding the type of stock offered, into general lines as well as roses. The early 1930's saw the nursery and business taken over by W H Fails
