'Blue Girl' rose Reviews & Comments

This rose did not perform well in South Mississippi from my experience. Although the bush itself was very healthy and a vigorous grower, the blooms did not do well in the heat and humidity. As the heat wore on, the blooms tended to get smaller, burn, or the stems the blooms were on got very spindly. Our plants blooms also had poor form and were always very loose and often appeared as though they were wilted. The one big positive is that the flowers had a great fragrance. My mom very much disliked this plant. I actually preferred Lady-X in our garden to Blue Girl (which was more often pink-ish girl in our garden).

Everything you wrote is correct. I notice the same: 1st-year as grafted-on-Dr.Huey is decent, but it's a decline in health for the 2nd year, and stems are spindly, and blooms don't last long, plus blackspot prone in high-rain, which leaches out calcium & potassium. It's very hard to maintain the health of grafted-on-Dr.Huey after the 1st-year, same with Double-Delight as grafted: 1st year is great, 2nd year is blackspot-prone.

'Twice in a Blue Moon' does the same too.

Are your Twice in a Blue Moon own-root?

No, they were budded, probably on Rosa laxa or Rosa 'Alba Simplex'..

I wonder if that's what is making a difference? I have quite a few doing very well but they aren't particularly old. Sorry you weren't happy with yours, hoping mine stay good!

I was very happy with the few flowers I did get, wondeful scent, but they did seem to always have tiny brown spots if you looked closely to the petals.

I wonder if it could be insect damage? Still beautiful though! I have some in a vase that seem to be unmarked and I'm no-spray. Lovely fragrance here, just love it!

I think it was possibly damage from rain, I don't generally have problems with pests like thrips. I think these lilac/mauve shades of roses work far better as a cut flower in a vase. It is often difficult to place them in the garden without the colour looking akward.

The sun in our hot climate here really does a number on them too. Thanks so much for your thoughts!

Blue girl's scent is best on the bush. Only with tons of rain that I get a 2nd flush from Bluegirl. My 1st Bluegirl (grafted on Dr.Huey) survived zone 5a winter, but died during hot & dry June, so I bought a 2nd one & will move this 2nd one to partial shade for better winter-survival.
