I started growing roses in 1997 when my vegetable garden was leveled by critters I just couldn't compete with any longer. My first rose bush order consisted of six plants. They arrived as sticks on the top and sticks on the bottom (bare root). I planted them, hoping I had planted the correct end in the ground and in just a few weeks I had flowers! I was amazed and I was hooked!
I now grow over 200 rose bushes in my yard. Most of them are of a different variety, some duplicate varieties.
I buy my roses from suppliers all over the U.S. and Canada. Some are grown on their own roots, some are grafted or budded onto Fortuniana, and many were purchased bare root, these most likely grafted onto Dr. Huey or Multiflora.
It was not until I began exhibiting that I really developed an understanding of how to grow healthy, clean, vigorous bushes that produce big, beautiful blooms.
Though there are some key things one must do to grow great roses, I have found roses to be very forgiving plants and it never ceases to amaze me how incredible the power of nature really is!
