You'll find 3,500 roses -- over 580 varieties, over 132 of which are Old Garden Roses -- in The Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden. The garden was dedicated in September 1988, but was originally designed in 1916 by Beatrix Jones Farrand. Farrand's plans were not actually carried out until 71 years later when Peggy and David Rockefeller funded its construction. The garden consists of 83 beds along three main walkways which radiate from a central gazebo. Generally, the roses are grouped by class -- the Modern roses towards the interior, Old Garden Roses on the perimeter. The curator of the rose garden is Peter E. Kukielski. The roses grown are those that are available to the home gardener.
