An Augustinian collegiate chapter or canonry was established in Ittingen around 1150. A Kartause (charterhouse) was founded in 1461 in the same location. The last monks had to leave the monastery in 1848. The premises were purchased in 1856 by the Fehr family which then for over 100 years farmed there for agriculture and viticulture. In 1977 the whole complex was purchased by the Stiftung (Trust) Kartause Ittingen. Since 1983 it is a cultural and educational centre with hotel and restaurant.
