The park was founded 1796 by Count Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki (1751 Krystynopol - March 14, 1805 Tulczyn), and named after his mistress and later wife Zofia De Witte (b. Clavone) (January 11, 1760 Bursa - November 24, 1822 Berlin). Spread over 1 square mile, the park is now managed by the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
