Mainau, Baden-Württemberg Germany
The island of Mainau in the lake of Constance (Bodensee) was purchased by the Grand-Duke Friedrich I in 1853. Friedrich established an Arboretum, the Italian rose garden and the Orangerie. He and the earlier owner Nikolaus von Esterhazy brought many exotic plants to the island. Upon his death in 1907, the island is inherited by his daughter Victoria, Queen of Sweden. Since then, the island's history has been attached to the Bernadotte family.
