The Peony Garden at the Nichols Arboretum of the University of Michigan was established in 1927 by Aubrey Tealdi, the chairman of the Landscape Architecture Department and the Arboretum's first director. Many of the original plants were given to Professor Tealdi by Dr. Walter Upjohn of Kalamazoo, an avid peony amateur, but better known as the founder of the Upjohn Corporation. The collection contains over 260 "old" varieties introduced to the trade between 1807 and 1948 with most between 1907 and 1925.
