Bred by Herbert C. Swim (United States, before 1946).
Introduced in United States by Armstrong Roses in 1950 as 'Sutter's Gold'.
Introduced in Australia by Hazlewood Bros. Pty. Ltd. in 1952 as 'Sutter's Gold'.
Class:
Hybrid Tea.  
Bloom:
Golden-yellow, orange highlights.  Bud orange overlaid indian red; flowers golden orange, often with red on outer petals, quince fragrance.  Strong fragrance.  25 to 35 petals.  Average diameter 4.5".  Large, very double, exhibition, high-centered bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Upright.  Glossy, dark green, leathery foliage.  

Height: 28" to 39" (70 to 100cm).  Width: up to 2' (up to 60cm).
Growing:
USDA zone 6b and warmer.  Very vigorous.  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.

Johann August Sutter (originally: Suter) (February 28, 1803 Bern/Switzerland - June 18, 1880 Washington D.C.), migrated 1834 to California and colonised from 1839 a large region he called New Helvetia in the Sacramento valley. When gold was found on his land in 1848, he was ruined by the chaos of the Gold Rush.
