Breeder's notes:
Not a lot of work has been done with Dr. Basye's species hybrids. I believe they hold the key to greatly increased disease resistance, and perhaps, other characteristics which aren't available yet. Basye's Blueberry contains genes from R. Virginiana, R. Carolina, Hybrid Perpetual and floribunda. It's a thornless, deciduous and incredibly healthy rose, with continuous summer bloom. Joycie is one of Ralph Moore's good breeding miniatures, which produces thornless seedlings with good health. By crossing the miniature with the larger shrub, I hoped to create a more dense, more compact, continuous blooming rose with few to no thorns and good disease resistance. What resulted is a shorter shrub with very Old Garden Rose appearing flowers. They resemble those of Heather Austin, but with a heavy, spicy, Old Garden Rose type fragrance. There are needle like prickles, but not so many as to make it undesirable. The plant produces them continuously throught the warm months in my climate and has demonstrated above average heat and disease resistance and tolerance. While not what I had envisioned from the cross, it's definitely too good of a rose not to hang on to.
