Introduced in France by Guillot/Roseraies Pierre Guillot in 1869 as 'Louis van Houtte'.
Introduced in Australia by Charles Wyatt, Frogmore Nursery in 1874 as 'Louis van Houtte'.
Class:
Hybrid Perpetual.  
Bloom:
Purple and red.  Strong fragrance.  40 petals.  Average diameter 4".  Large, full (26-40 petals), cupped, globular bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  
Habit:
Armed with thorns / prickles.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  Disease susceptibility: susceptible to rust .

Notes:
Louis Van Houtte was born at Ypres 29 June 1810 and died at Ghent 9 May 1876. Well-known Belgian horticulturalist... his very large company propagated many plants. He published Flore des Serres et Jardins de l'Europe, a veritable plant museum including over 2,000 colored plates... the prince of 19th Century horticulture.
