Introduced in Switzerland by Établissement horticole in 1934 as 'Mutabilis'.

Bloom:

Yellow to pink, ages to crimson . In full bloom with its multi-colored flowers, it appears to be covered with butterflies.. Mild fragrance. 5 petals. Average diameter 3". Single (4-8 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Habit:

Armed with thorns / prickles, bushy, lax, upright. Glossy, dark green foliage. 5 leaflets.

Height: 4' to 10' (120 to 305cm). Width: 3' to 6' (90 to 185cm).

Growing:

USDA zone 7b through 10b. Can be used for hedge. Very vigorous. rain tolerant. shade tolerant.

'Mutabilis' was found ca. 1894 by the Swiss botanist Henri Correvon (August 15, 1894 Yverdon - November 5, 1939 Herisau) growing in the parks of the island of Isola Bella, one of the Borromean Islands in the Lago Maggiore, on the estate of the Gilberto Borromeo, Prince of Angera (May 18, 1859 Torino - February 28, 1941 Milano). The prince is said to have given the rose to Correvon as a gift, who named it 'Rosa mutabilis' and described it 1934. Its origins is unknown, but it was apparently already in commerce in the region of Lago Maggiore and Lago di Como.
