Notes:
Denis Hélye was born 7 June 1827 on the Rue de la Clef in Paris, France. He signed on with the Jardin des Plantes at the age of ten after the death of his father, having thus become the only means of support for his aged and infirm mother... At length, he was named Chief Horticulturalist at the Natural History Museum at the age of 20. Whenever offered more lucrative positions elsewhere, he would refuse them in order to retain his old post, which he indeed kept until his death last March 29 [1884] at the age of 57.
