[From Les Amis des Roses, March-April 1936, p. 56:] Notre Société a été douloureusement frappée en perdant M. Jean LEENDERS. un des animateurs de la grande Maison Hollandaise M. LEENDERS, à Steyl-Tegelen. M. J. LEENDERS est décédé à l'âge de 86 ans. Durant sa longue et belle vie, il compta parmi les plus illustres horticulteurs Hollandais.

[From Gemak in Tegele, 2013, by Paul Seelen, p. 90-91:] Forefather Thijs Leenders...looked after the gardens of the immensely rich trader/shipowner/large ground owner Karel de Rijk in Steyl...His sons Johannes and Andreas started around 1880 their own nursery a stone's throw away and then broadened their activities towards Barlo and Kaldenkerken. In 1885 they started beside trees also with roses...The old nursery Gebr. Leenders was taken over by four sons. A fifth son, Mathieu, established M. Leenders & Co. in Alland....In 1943 Jan Leenders, son of Mathieu, started his own nursery in Kaldenkerkenweg in Tegelen together with Henri Vanhorst.

[From Opkomst en de Bloei van Rozendorp Lottum, by Huub Hendrix, 2015, p. 71:] It was Johannes and Andreas Leenders who founded a tree nursery in Steyl-Tegelen around 1880 and started growing roses before 1885. ...Johannes Leenders had five sons who all went into breeding. Their company N.V. Gebr. Leenders was later continued by four sons, while Mathieu started his own nursery in 1909 under the name M. Leenders & Co....

[From Opkomst en de Bloei van Rozendorp Lottum, by Huub Hendrix, 2015, p. 74ff. :] Mathieu Leenders ..... started his own company in 1908, with his father as a silent partner, under the name M. Leenders & Co. ...In 1928 the production consised of 500'000 shrub roses and between 6'000 and 10'000 standard roses....In 1933 the operation covered 18 hectares and only roses were grown....Mathieu Leenders had 4 sons and 5 daughters. His sons Mathieu Jr. and Jan went into the rose business. Mathieu Jr.'s son Peter had a mixed nursery in Helden with mainly roses. Peter's brother Jan started a nursery with Henri Venhorst in 1943.
