1952 The Rose Annual p135. Round the Nurseries. Henry Drew: Henry Drew, Longworth, Berks. 60 years ago Henry Drew started the hard way, when if you could tie about 1000 buds a day you were promoted to budder. In 1896 he became Rose grower to a noted amateur of that time, Mr Alfred Tate, at Leatherhead....... after some 18 months (circa 1898) at Leatherhead Mr Drew became foreman at the Ledbury branch for Messrs. Alex Dickson and Sons Ltd., then the chief winners of N.R.S. medals for new seedling roses. The big moment came when, in 1902, he commenced business on his own account at Longworth, specialising in teas and winning the tea championship 24 distinct varieties twice and being runner-up on many occasions......Back to the nursery at Longworth, after these most interesting memories, we still find him maintaining is Rose acres with the assistance of his two sons. photo: Henry Drew
