This photo is taken in May 2009 and shows the part of my garden on the other side of the village road with what my neighbour likes to call "my basic position". And yes, I do favour this spot very much. One of my cherry trees up and died on me recenly which made me quite sad as it had this typical delightfully warped and bent over windridden shape of so many trees around here. However,on the bright side it left me with a favourite spot to relax and enjoy a sunny day. In the early spring, this part of the garden is filled with hundreds and hundreds of flowering crocuses, Galanthus and later Scillas, Daffodils and a variety of Bluebells and numerous other bulb plants. It is quite a sight. In the photo only Dicentra Eximia called Småhjerter(Little Hearts) in Norwegian, and Cherry Blossoms are visibly in bloom. The original Rugosas grow in this part of the garden. This year I have planted the ramblers "Venusta Pendula" and "Aksel Olsen" here up two fruit trees, hoping for a good result eventually.

Blooms start out a rich, deep red and age to a very dark red as in this photo. Plant where there is shade in the afternoon so as not to fry these lovely blooms with the hot afternoon sun. Wonderful fragrance, too. This plant is in USDA zone 5, Upstate NY.
